This video documents
the Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa 2001 World Conference, the
extraordinary culmination of the Partnership's efforts to create consensus among
Africans and Americans about the steps needed to increase the effectiveness
of development assistance and bring about real progress in the fight to end
hunger in Africa.
The conference
took place on June 25-27, 2001, in Washington, D.C. Participants from African,
U.S., and international organizations reviewed and debated the draft Strategic
Framework and Action Plan of the Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa.
The meetings took place in the presence of the co-chairs and of his Excellency
President John Kufuor of Ghana, the Prime Ministers of Uganda and Mozambique,
the special representative of the President of Nigeria; the Executive Secretary
of CILSS, the African Diplomatic Corps based in Washington, USAID Director Andrew
Natsios, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Walter Kansteiner III, and hundreds
of other participants from Africa, the United States, and other countries.
The Partnership
to Cut Hunger in Africa is co-chaired by Michigan State University President
M. Peter McPherson, Mali President Alpha Oumar KonarŽ, Senator Robert Dole,
and Lee Hamilton.
After two days
of deliberations, conference participants released the Washington Proclamation
on Cutting Hunger and Poverty in Africa.
