Play Icon Play It
108 minutes.
From 12/8/2007.
Commencement ceremony for baccalaureate degree candidates from the colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Communication Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Natural Science and Nursing.

The speaker is Winston E. Scott, former NASA astronaut aboard the Endeavour and Columbia shuttles, and vice president and deputy general manager of Jacobs Engineering, one of the largest engineering contractors in the world. He will receive an honorary doctor of engineering at the ceremony.

Before joining NASA in 1992, Winston E. Scott was a captain in the U.S. Navy and an associate instructor of electrical engineering at Florida A&M University and Florida Community College in Jacksonville. He served on the 1996 and 1997 Endeavour and Columbia missions, respectively. In addition, he was on a second 1997 Columbia flight which involved the difficult manual capture of a Spartan satellite and the testing of tools and procedures for future space station assembly.

Recently retired from NASA and now an on-air consultant on space shuttle issues for MSNBC, Scott’s work in space is regarded as a case study in leadership and expert communications. He received his master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. He is the former executive director of the Florida Space Authority.
