Baccalaureate Degrees: Morning Ceremony

Commencement ceremony for baccalaureate degree candidates from James Madison College, the Eli Broad College of Business, and the colleges of Arts and Letters, Education, Music and Social Science.

The speaker is Peter Löscher, who brings years of domestic and foreign experience in various pharmaceutical and medical companies to Siemens AG, where he is president and chief executive officer. He will receive an honorary doctor of engineering at the ceremony.

In 2007, Peter Löscher became president and CEO of Siemens AG, one of the world's largest electrical engineering and electronics companies, with headquarters in Berlin and Munich, Germany. His international management experience began in 1988 with the Hoechst Group, and in his 11 years with the company he held top management positions in Spain, the United States, Britain and Japan.

He later moved to General Electric Healthcare and GE Healthcare Bio-Sciences in Britain, where he served as president and CEO. Prior to his appointment at Siemens, he was the president of global human health at Merck & Co. Inc., in New Jersey. Löscher studied economics at Vienna University and at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, received his master’s of business administration from Vienna University and graduated from the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University.

Whether researching global human health issues, managing international companies or circling the globe – literally – Michigan State University’s three December commencement speakers are proof that access to education means access to the world and beyond.

Pioneer biologist Ian Wilmut focuses on developing new treatments for human diseases; Peter Löscher brings years of domestic and foreign experience in various pharmaceutical and medical companies to Siemens AG, where he is president and chief executive officer; and Winston E. Scott, former NASA astronaut aboard the Endeavour and Columbia shuttles, is vice president and deputy general manager of Jacobs Engineering, one of the largest engineering contractors in the world.
