An international expert on cloning techniques, he researches the mechanisms that bring about molecular changes during the cloning process. He has testified in the United Kingdom, France and the United States on the legislative regulation of cloning.

In 2005, he was awarded the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize, Germany’s top medical research award. In 2000, Wilmut was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the highest Scottish society of learning, and, in 1999, he was named a member of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. He has written many articles and research papers. He received his doctorate from and did his postdoctoral work at the University of Cambridge.
